Rutland in the Civil War (Part 3 - The Sharpshooters)
Robert Ranftle continues his in depth study of Rutland during the Civil War with “Part 3-The Sharpshooters” with Lt. Col. Ripley, Commanding Officer Company F. 1st Regiment, U.S. Sharpshooters pictured on the cover. His own history of Company F provided a “cornerstone” for the ensuing article.
Sharpshooters became a major factor during the war, and had to pass stringent target shooting tests to be selected. Rutland became a qualification site, and supplied the Union Army with a number of expert marksmen.
This is their story. Who they were; what weapons they used; the formation of Vermont Sharpshooters; their experiences in 21 battles, and commentary on their significant
contributions. An excellent, well resourced article.
